Hi -

I read the messages on the same topic posted last year.

I encounter the same problem. My environment is:
- Topfield 5100 pvr masterpiece
- laptop with win xp
- DVR-Studio Pro 1.56 which I downloaded yesterday to evaluate

The result of the conversion renders a DVD which video picture stutters about 2-3 times each second whereas the audio is ok.

I burned the DVD with the lowest possible speed (2x) availabe to me.
The size of the movie is about 2.5GB.

Can you point me at what I should do about this to be able to create a smooth high-quality DVD record?

first of all we have to find out if the problem ist recording related or DVD-media related.
- Please try a different recording from a totally different TV-channel.
- Use RW-Media to try.
- Also try to play the resulting VIDEO_TS directory directly on the PC (last page of the DVD-wizard)

OK -

I checked the original (movie A recorded from YLE in Finland) with VLC Media Player and it worked well. Then I selected another program (movie B recorded from TV4 of Finland) and passed it through DVR-S without burning it. I looked at the intermediate result with Windows Media Player and it looked ok. Next I continued with DVR-S and burned it and, again, it looked well both with WMP and on my off-line DVD device and my TV.



So all I did was pick another movie and change the burning to be a separate task. This doesn't sound as a good explanation to the original problem, does it? Hence I rerun the DVR-S for Movie B and let it flow all the way I'm amazed. The end result is OK.

Finally I took the original Movie A and made a complete rerun of it without changing any parametes whatsoever... and back to square one, the problem exists on the final DVD. I took a look at the interim "VTS_01_1" file for Movie A on my hard disk and that seems to be working (with a small dissync between speech and picture).



So the problem pins down to the burning stage. It works with one but not the other movie! What can cause this phenomena for one movie but not the other? Movie A is shorter than Movie B.

My environment is:
- Acer laptop with 750Mb of memory
- DVD: QSI DVD+-RW SDW-082
- DVD driver: Microsoft 5.1.2535.0 dated 7/1/2001
- The DVD media is a DVD-R 4.7GB from Gigatain

to make sure the burning process is the problem: please switch to "Nero" burning interface on the 4th page of the DVD-Wizard. It is sufficient to install the demo version of Nero if you do not have it.

I don't believe it is a problem of the burning I assume it is a problem with YLE recordings for your DVD-player. Sat-recordings often use profiles not in the DVD-specification. This can be:
- non-DVD resolution (like 480x576)
- large GOP (Group of pictures).

The problem you describe sound like long GOP. DVD-streams have to include a full-encoded picture every 18 frames. But on satellite there can be up to 27 pictures until there is a full encoded frame. This is called a long GOP. Most DVD-Players do not have a problem with it, but some do.

Can you try the DVD on a totally different DVD-player?

I installed Nero and retried with no success.

I made the writing interface "Nero" as suggested but it did not do the trick.
The installation of Nero was OK (once I managed to get all its 170+ MB's downloaded).

You are referring to satellite channels. This is not my case. I'm trying to create the DVD from a picture broadcasted by the national TV-operator of Finland which I captured over the digital antenna network with my Topfield TF5100 PVRt Masterpiece.

I would be surprised if the content would not be appropriate.

You refer to "non-DVD resolution" and "large GOP". How can I verify what the picture I'm working on is neither of them?

As to trying on a different DVD-player, I've been using the laptop and the stand-alone DVD player, both showing the same result. I don't think the problem is on that side.

On a sidenote: I can see that the subtitles are missing. I understand that YLE runs the subtitles as separate files or streams (as per some digital broadcasting standard) and not burned in the main stream. How can I include the subtitles?

I also note that the picture was made in the 1950's so the dimensions of it may be 4:3 and not 16:9 )or something else). Would this have an impact?

It doesn't matter if the stream originates from DVB-T (terrestrial) or DVB-S (satellite). Die format is the same, so no problem here.

But I see in your log, that at about 35 minutes a lot of invalid audioframes have been detected in your recording. So that's no good anyway. But it should not have an impact at the beginning of the DVD.

If the Nero interface doesn't work I can't help it. That beast either works or not... In the locks I see "files rallocation failed". Have you switched on the "Panasonic" option in the menu editor? Switch it off please and leave "Jump Back" at "Yes".

What you can try is changing the bitrate patching in the "Settings" window (menu "view"). Set it to 2MBit or 3Mbit. Default is 6, the max. is 8. Maybe you can experiment with different settings.

But I very much suspect a problem with the burning interface. Maybe you can try on a different PC or use different DVD-media?

I reduced the bitrate to 2MB and replaced Nero with the original I had (ASPI) and did a rerun of the process - and that changed the way the result behaves.

On my PC with Windows Media Player I see some stuttering but on my DVD player it runs smooth.

I assume that the reduction of the bitrate also resulted in poorer quality of the picture. I shall elaborate more on that later on.

No, this only patches the headers of each frame and this way tells the DVD-player how large to create it's internal buffers. See the online-help for further details.

There is no effect on the picture quality.
