Ken Kutaragi Reveals Sony's Initial Doubts About PlayStation's Success

Ken Kutaragi, former president of Sony Interactive Entertainment, recently shared that many within Sony were skeptical about the original PlayStation's potential for success. Given the immense popularity and dominance of the PlayStation brand today, this revelation comes as a surprise.

Contrary to expectations, the PS1 became a massive success, winning the "console war" for two consecutive generations. Kutaragi remained with Sony until 2007, overseeing the successful launch of the PS2, but left following the less favorable reception of the PS3.

The PS1 remains beloved by gamers, with classics like Final Fantasy 7, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Gran Turismo continuing to be celebrated today. Similarly, the PlayStation 2 earned its place as the best-selling console of all time.

Nearly 30 years after the PS1’s debut, the PlayStation brand remains strong. The PS5 is estimated to have sold around 61.7 million units, far outpacing Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S, which sits at about 28.3 million units. Had Kutaragi and his team listened to early doubts, the gaming landscape might be entirely different today.
